Porcelain has a significant place in the oeuvre of sculptor Rimma Pancehovska (1928). She has created elegant, lively feminine figures from the most refined ceramics materials. These range from Argentinian, Indian and Egyptian dancers in exotic costumes to folk maidens and fairy tale characters, reflected in the titles such as “Cinderella”, “Scheherezade”, “Carmen” and “Princess Gundega”.

The exhibition “Porcelain Dance” will showcase the artist’s individual pieces as well as mass produced exemplars from the period when Pancehovska worked at Riga Porcelain Factory, straight after completing her studies in the Sculpture Department of the Art Academy of Latvia. Her stint at the factory was relatively brief, as she soon focused on individual commissions as well as being as a teacher at Riga Applied Arts Secondary School.

Rimma Pancehovska created an extensive series of important Latvian miniature porcelain works, although the large dimensions of many of them are more akin to sculpture.  Her artworks are found in the Artists’ Union of Latvia Museum, the National Art Museum of Latvia, the Museum of Decorative Art and Design, Riga Porcelain Museum, the State Tretyakov Art Gallery, as well as other museum and private collections.
