Jānis Kupčs’ ceramic style entices with its intelligent, witty content. His latest works are inspired by absurdist author Daniil Kharms’ book “Happenings”. The title of the exhibition - “Pushkin had four sons, and they were all idiots” – is a quotation from the first line of an anecdote from Pushkin’s life in the book.
Jānis Kupčs is a successful artist in two media – ceramics and painting. His ceramic works are conceptual compositions dominated by clean form, materiality and humour.
Jānis Kupčs was born in 1969. He is a graduate of Tallinn Art Institute and the Art Academy of Latvia. In the field of ceramics, he has been a regular participant in the Tallinn Applied Art Triennale. Since 2009 he has regularly organised international small form ceramics symposiums in Ventspils.
