On display in the Riga Porcelain museum’s windows from 1 October to 14 November 2021
“The “Constructions” have both conditions and opportunities for diversity. The conditions include spatial parameters, colours and dimensions of details, the direction of gravitational force, the boundaries of the artist’s intelligence and aesthetic sense. The opportunities are presented by the infinite options for arranging the grey, pink and white porcelain posts. The “Constructions” are distant relations of the principles for layering the logs in log cabins. This gives these objects a kinship with unfinished miniature architecture forms, such as porcelain models in which it is possible to briefly gain a sense of an unusual living space through the imagination. The construction of these forms is an interplay of attention, movement coordination and seemingly random choices, and it can be played repeatedly through new arrangements of the porcelain posts. “Dismantling” is an inescapable aspect of “construction” and part of the rules of the game”, the artist explains about the exposition.
Dainis Pundurs is one of Latvia’ s leading ceramics artists. He creates both monolithic, large-scale works as well as subtle, fragile structures, with the potential for variations. His works encompass tangibly perceivable symbols, which in conjunction with geometric abstraction and near-minimalist expressive forms convey delicate-yet-broad messages. Dainis graduated from the Ceramics Department of the Art Academy of Latvia, where he is now an associate professor. He was nominated for the Purvītis Prize for the exhibition “Porcelain and Conscious Dreams” held at Gallery “Daugava” 06.12.2017–27.01.2018 and received gold medals under the Martinsons Prize at the Latvian International Ceramics Biennale in 2016 and 2021.
