In Riga Porcelain museum from 14th August till 4th October, year 2015.
As well as being my work and my favorite pastime, porcelain painting is the principal of the three directions of my creative work in ceramics. In the last two years my pieces have been created spontaneously, as an emotional reaction to the biggest challenge of my life – writing on porcelain painting. This exhibition is a declaration of my feelings and an illustration to the upcoming research paper 'Porcelain overglaze painting techniques'. The works exhibited and the techniques used in their creation selectively reflect the research paper’s chapters on graphic techniques, painting, aerial and background coating, decals, lusters and gilding. Excerpts from these chapters are included in the exhibition catalog.
I consider myself a formalist in art because, as I like say tongue-in-cheek, I do everything the wrong way. Unlike a normal artist, I do not start with a concept, which I then execute accordingly; instead I start with a technique, an interesting method, and only then I think how could I use it. The shape of the vessel is important as well. Most of all I love the process of the work – when a piece is already started, but not yet finished. It is a very interesting moment, when everything is being created, everything is changing and anything can happen. The concept and the title usually come to me only when the piece is finished, when I can look at it, think about it and really see what has been created. Then it becomes clear what emotions and observations are being reflected in the end product.
