Porcelain dolls started to produce in 18th century and they were made for aristocracy’s children to play with. Handmade dolls nowadays are considered to be luxurious objects. Riga Porcelain Museum invites everyone to become acquainted with the porcelain doll production technology by facing the delicate beauty of dolls. This exhibition confirms that if you have grounding knowledge and a true wish, you can make your own unique doll.
The express exhibition features dolls made by artist Elita Šmēdiņa, as well as those made by the participants of the museum’s Doll Workshops. The dolls were made using the previously prepared forms. The cast porcelain details: arms, legs and head were painted after firing. In this process the distinct facial features, expression and character is given to a doll, which is then highlighted by matching costume.
The leader of Porcelain Doll Workshop Elita Šmēdiņa, combining here knowledge in fashion design and ceramics, creates and helps to create unique and captivating dolls.
